Biography
John Gardner was born on the Iowa-Nebraska border. As a boy his father gave
him a camera and taught him to how to work its controls. Beyond that basic instruction
he is self-taught, and began to consider photography seriously in 1985 after
a trip to London. His publications are few, and in fairly obscure magazines.
Until recently he had not exhibited his work publicly. He left photography almost
entirely for over a decade while earning a doctorate in medieval literature
and is employed as a professor of Spanish. Currently he is at work on three
projects:
Strangers — A study of pedestrians in the American city spanning over
two decades.
Antes de coñece-la moriña / Before I knew I’d miss you —
Black and white work centered on nostalgia for the Galicia region of Spain
Look What I See — An on-going series about the melancholy beauty of our
daily surroundings.
